What is the role of this product?
Vigeo - Sustainability Country Rating© measures and compares the levels of integration of sustainable development objectives in a country’s institutional systems and public policies.
The ratings are dedicated to information and assists in decision-making about sovereign bonds.
The results provide a picture of the comparative risks and performances of a universe composed of 160 countries, with regard to universally acknowledged social responsibility objectives.
Vigeo has regrouped these sustainable development goals into three rating domains, each of which comes on equal weight in the model:
- Rule of law and governance (respect of fundamental human rights, compliance of the rule of law with international norms and quality of control systems…)
- Social protection and solidarity (on going improvement of education systems, social welfare, health services, international aid...)
- Environmental protection
Our methodology
Our methodological choices are structured by two types of filters. The first identifies countries that respect the rule of law, fundamental human rights, democratic governance, market rules, universal environmental protection standards and social standards. This universe is then filtered a second time, to rank countries according to their human and environmental development needs.
To achieve this, we base our SR rating of nation states on the review of 124 indicators which:
- reflect the state’s level of commitment to the goals and principles set by major international agreements
- measure the effectiveness of the state’s sustainable development actions.
Therefore, we define as our reference model of internationally approved CSR objectives for nation states - even if they have not ratified these objectives and by the simple fact that they belong to the United Nations Organisation - the principles and rules approved by the international community:
- Millennium Development Goals
- Agenda 21
- Conventions, recommendations and statements of the ILO (International Labour Organisation)
- United Nations Charter and Treaties
- Guiding principles of the OECD
- Regional instruments, assuming that they fully comply with the basic principles of the United Nations Charter, Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its related protocols and treaties.
Our main references are: World Bank, UNDP, UNEP, UNODC, UNICEF, UN Habitat, WHO, FAO, UNCTAD, UNDDA, ILO, OECD, OHCHR, etc.
We also look carefully at observations by non-governmental international and national organisations such as: Global Unions (professional trade unions at international level), Amnesty International, Transparency International, Freedom House, World Resource Institute, COFACE, Reporters Without Borders, etc. What advantages does this product have for our clients?
