To help institutional investors and managers who select sovereign funds, Vigeo launched the Sustainability Country Rating©, a new ratings service of 160 countries on environmental social and governance criteria.
Vigeo evaluates institutional systems, public commitments and performances of countries using 40 objectives of sustainable development in three areas:
- Rule of law and governance (respect of freedoms and fundamental rights of people, conformity to the rule of law with universal standards and the effectiveness of its control, etc.)
- Social protection and solidarity (continuous improvement of access to education and levels of education, social and sanitary well-being of populations, internal systems of solidarity, contribution to international cooperation, etc.)
- Protecting the environment
These criteria are based on the principles and objectives defined by the United Nations and its specialised agencies, including the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals and Agenda 21 .
To provide the best possible service on the market, Vigeo has chosen an expanded coverage (160 countries indexed) and an in-depth analysis (124 indicators), which constitutes the best coverage / in-depth analysis ratio available today.
The results provide financial operators with innovative help in making responsible decisions in matters of fund placement.
Fouad Benseddik, Institutional Methods and Relations Director of Vigeo, explains: "For Vigeo, sustainability and responsibility of government policy is not assumed with the richness of a country.
We will highlight countries whose index of human development is average or poor as long as they show tangible commitments in favour of democracy, that they favour the promotion of human, social and fundamental rights and that they account for their governance.
This way, in the final ratings, countries like Ghana or Senegal are 32nd and 34th rather than at the very bottom. This does not stop rich and democratic countries, concretely committed in favour of sustainable development, to also be recognised and highlighted."
