Revision of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises

The OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises are the first major international standards defining corporate social responsibility in general. This instrument, adopted in 1976, updated in 2000 has just been updated once again in 2011.

Its new rules clarify the responsibilities of enterprises in respect of human rights, working conditions and climate change. It urges companies to not stop at general declamations but to carry out assessments (due diligences) of their corporate responsibility risks on perimeters including subcontractors and their sphere of influence. The control device of the OECD guidelines remains controversial.

OECD-Watch, an independent NGO, reviewed the progress and weaknesses of the new version of this instrument.

Amnesty International on its side considers that the review is totally insufficient to guarantee respect for human rights.
